I’ve attempted the old blogging thing before. For one reason or another I always seem to let them fade away, some before they even get a full head of steam. Still, I want a blog. Call it that innate human instinct to be wanted, to be paid attention to but I’ve always wanted a successful blog that people made it a point to read or check in from time-to-time. This time around I’m taking a decidedly different approach.
I’m giving my blog a specific reason for existence. For this blog, there shouldn’t be an existential crisis somewhere around the fourth or fifth entry. I won’t be blogging about my daily routine (boring) or how my lady friend won’t listen to what I tell her (I know better than that!).
No, this blog has a predestined journey. It will always be about one thing; one author and his works. I’ve always had an interest in what Stephen King writes about. His novels and his philosophy on writing has always intrigued me. I’ve read a few of his books and have always enjoyed them. So one day I got the bright idea that I needed to read them all; even the short stories and the Bachman books. The “all-or-nothing” tendency has been something I’ve entertained since childhood. I love completing collections. If I have one or two things in a set, my obsessive compulsive side tells me I need them all. The internet has not helped this.
So when I decided to read all of Mr. King’s books I had to collect something associated with this endeavor. My fiance and I don’t have a lot of extra money lying around so I’m not “allowed” to buy them…although I want to, so badly…so very badly. Therefore, I’m being forced to check books that I don’t already own out of the local library. This will work for only so long. They don’t have his entire bibliography and most of the more popular novels are consistently checked out. So I’ll at least get to buy a few.
So that’s the raison d’ĂȘtre for this blog. I’m picking up Carrie (1974) from the library today and I’ll hopefully have it finished in a few days. Then I’ll post my thoughts and a review of sorts on here. Think of it those wonderful book reports you did back in the day. I’ll try and put it in it’s historical context with some thoughtful insight sprinkled on for good measure. Feel free to post your thoughts and let me know what you think. Recommendations are welcome, but know in advance I’ll be reading each work in chronological order of publishing. Carrie was first, so be prepared for some telepathic, pubescent angst!
Oh, and don’t expect me to write a blog entry everyday. When I finish a novel or a short story I’ll write something up and post it. There may be lengthy stretches of no entries, simply because I’m not a fast reader/writer. I do promise you though that if you’re patient and you like finishing things, you’ll eventually find a full listing and review of every work Stephen King has ever written.
Hope you enjoy the ride, Faithful Reader!
